According to the company, each Crusoe DFM-powered GPU can reduce emissions by approximately 4.4 carbon dioxide equivalent metric tons annually.

As per the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers consumed a staggering 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy in 2022, with projections indicating a twofold increase by 2026. An analysis by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) forecasts that data center energy consumption in the U.S. will double, primarily driven by AI. Global computing energy demands are on an upward trajectory, with estimates projecting over 38GW by 2030. Despite this, inefficiencies in energy utilization persist, with 144 billion cubic feet of natural gas being flared in 2021. Data centers alone could consume over 8% of global electricity by 2030, a stark rise from just 1% in 2020, in line with IEA data. Through the utilization of Digital Flare Mitigation (DFM) and Digital Renewable Optimization (DRO) technologies, Crusoe captures and converts natural gas that would otherwise be flared. Sean Liu, Partner at Founders Fund, lauded Crusoe’s endeavors, remarking that: “Crusoe is reimagining AI infrastructure from the ground up to meet and exceed organizations’ demands, propelling the next wave of innovation in a sustainable manner.” Crusoe’s approach adeptly tackles two critical challenges: the reduction of methane emissions and the facilitation of high-performance AI infrastructure. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is often released during flaring, significantly contributing to climate change. By repurposing this waste into a productive energy source, Crusoe not only mitigates environmental harm but also propels technological advancement. In addition to natural gas, Crusoe harnesses stranded and surplus renewable energy, further diminishing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Crusoe’s operations span across 9 U.S. states and 3 countries, including Iceland, with over 15 gigawatts of clean energy projects in the pipeline. Through its DFM technology in the U.S., Crusoe managed to avert over 680,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The company diligently monitors and reduces its greenhouse gas footprint by annually assessing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions through Emitwise’s carbon accounting platform, in alignment with the GHG Protocol. By leveraging quantity and expenditure data, Crusoe calculates emissions across its operations, value chain, and employee activities.
