Irish Universities Seek Innovators for Cutting-Edge Agroforestry Master’s Program

NOTS Calls for Tenders to Develop Master of Science Programme in Agroforestry

National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS) is currently inviting tenders from higher education institutions to create and implement a Master of Science (MSc) program in agroforestry. Agroforestry encompasses a range of land-use practices where trees are integrated with crops and/or livestock on the same plot of land, fostering significant ecological and economic synergies between the trees and agricultural elements.

Established in 2007, NOTS is a non-profit network that provides high-quality, cost-effective training for the growing organic sector across Ireland. Co-funded by Skillnet Ireland and network companies, NOTS is dedicated to enhancing skills and knowledge within the organic industry. The new MSc program, as outlined in the tender documents, will concentrate on agroforestry techniques suitable for Irish conditions, with a strong focus on incorporating agroforestry into agricultural systems to enhance sustainable land use, biodiversity, and climate mitigation.

The primary objective of the program is to equip graduates with the expertise and competencies necessary to assist farmers in formulating plans and becoming certified to apply for relevant agroforestry grants from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Marine (DAFM). Students will acquire the essential knowledge to guide farmers in implementing agroforestry practices on their farms.

The selected institution will collaborate with key stakeholders, including DAFM, governmental bodies, industry specialists, and research organizations, to develop and deliver the program. Covering topics such as sustainable agriculture, agroforestry systems, climate resilience, biodiversity, and Irish land-use regulations, the part-time course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of agroforestry practices.

NOTS has emphasized that the awarding of tenders is contingent upon available funding. The deadline for tender submissions is 5:00 p.m. on March 25, 2025.
